Training Course and Workshop Reports

The aim of the training courses was to instill an appreciation of benefits and constraints of GIS and remote sensing. Both aquaculture and inland fisheries were covered. Courses were held in Rome (Travaglia and Appelkamp, 1985), Asia (FAO, 1989), Anglophone Africa (FAO, 1991), Francophone Africa (FAO, 1992), and in Latin America. A manual for self-training on GIS and remote sensing applications was produced (Meaden and Kapetsky, 1991) and it is still being widely disseminated to date as much of the main text remains relevant (see http://www.fao.org/DOCREP/003/T0446E/T0446E00.HTM).

Abstract / DescriptionAn AdriaMed Training course on “the Use of Geographic Information Systems in Fisheries and Aquaculture” was conducted in Split, Croatia, from 3 to 13 July 2007 with the support of the Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries (IOF) in Split. The course was attended by twelve fishery biologists representing Adriatic research institutions from four different countries. The training programme aimed to provide Adriatic scientists involved in fisheries with the basic knowledge of GIS tools in relation to some key issues in the context of fisheries and aquaculture management. Many positive comments were received by participants about the course and key conclusions, recommendations and implications for AdriaMed and the Fishery and Aquaculture Management Division are provided as a follow-up to this course.
