Literature

Review of the literature is an essential starting point for any endeavour in GIS, remote sensing, or mapping. Yet, reviews are often incomplete for lack of access to the material, and consequently projects experience durations that are longer and costs that are higher than need be because the accumulated knowledge has not been tapped and taken advantage of. This page sets out to mitigate that problem. It is a gateway to the literature that represents much of the accumulated global experience on using GIS, remote sensing and mapping to solve problems and issues in aquaculture and inland fisheries. Spatial issues addressed most frequently for aquaculture and inland fisheries are listed in two tables in issues section along with the number of literature records currently contained in GISFish databases. Four recent studies available for download in issues section provide background information on GISFish databases.

Abstract / DescriptionJapanese scallop, Patinopecten (Mizuhopecten) yessoensis Jay, is the most important scallop cultivation in Japan. This cultivation industry plays an important rule in economic and social welfare of the coastal communities and supports coastal communities with an annual increase of economic activity in shellfish productions. To sustain the level of productions, identification and selection of suitable sites is critical step and need to be considered. This study was conducted to identify the most suitable sites for hanging culture of Japanese scallop using remote sensing and geographic information system (GIS)-based models. The primary data sources used in this study include multi sensor remotely sensed data (SeaWiFS, MODIS and ALOS AVNIR-2), digital and analog maps and global positioning system (GPS) data. Based on the sources of data, eight based layers were grouped into three different submodels, namely physical (sea temperature, suspended sediment and bathymetry), biological (seed avaliability and phytoplankton) and social and infrastructural (ditance to town, pier and land-based facilities). A consraint layer was used to exclude areas from suitability maps that cannot allowed to develop scallop aquaculture, including harbor, area near town/industrial and river mouth. Data processing and modeling were performed mainly with ArcGIS 9.2, while SeaDAS 4.9 and ERDAS Imagine 9.1 were used for satellite image processing. Multi-criteria evaluation known as weighted linear combination was adopted in GIS models to identify the suitable areas into a scale from 1 to 8 scoring system, 8 being the most suitable and 1 least for scallop culture development. This study revealed that over the total potential area of 1038 km2 with bottom depth less than 60 m, 57% had the higher scores (scores 7 and 8). Those areas were located along the bay from Shikabe to Muroran which having the optimum condition for scallop aquaculture (Map 1). The final model output was compared with existing scallop operational data and found to be consistent. This study showed the usefulness of the GIS database of different formats and sources can be used effectively to identify spatial model of suitability levels for scallop aquaculture.
