Literature

Review of the literature is an essential starting point for any endeavour in GIS, remote sensing, or mapping. Yet, reviews are often incomplete for lack of access to the material, and consequently projects experience durations that are longer and costs that are higher than need be because the accumulated knowledge has not been tapped and taken advantage of. This page sets out to mitigate that problem. It is a gateway to the literature that represents much of the accumulated global experience on using GIS, remote sensing and mapping to solve problems and issues in aquaculture and inland fisheries.

Spatial issues addressed most frequently for aquaculture and inland fisheries are listed in two tables in issues section along with the number of literature records currently contained in GISFish databases.

Four recent studies available for download in issues section provide background information on GISFish databases.

Title(Assessment of the coastal shrimp aquaculture potential in the Mar Muerto lagoon, using the multicriteria analysis techniques along with a SIG). Original title: Evaluacion del potencial para acuacultura costera de camaron en el entorno de la laguna de Mar Muerto, mediante la aplicacion de tecnicas de analisis multicriterio con un SIG.

Abstract / DescriptionConsidering production-cost factors, this paper analyses the opportunities and the extent of land suitability areas to establish and develop coastal shrimp culture activities in areas nearby to the Mar Muerto lagoon, Mexico. Six factors were considered: proximity to salt water sites, proximity to roads, proximity to raw-matter sources, well-being level, land use and land cover, and electricity. Results showed that there are 0.9% of the total area with high potential for aquaculture activities, 62.8% with medium potential and 36.3% with low potential.
