| | | Review of the literature is an essential starting point for any endeavour in GIS, remote sensing, or mapping. Yet, reviews are often incomplete for lack of access to the material, and consequently projects experience durations that are longer and costs that are higher than need be because the accumulated knowledge has not been tapped and taken advantage of. This page sets out to mitigate that problem. It is a gateway to the literature that represents much of the accumulated global experience on using GIS, remote sensing and mapping to solve problems and issues in aquaculture and inland fisheries. Spatial issues addressed most frequently for aquaculture and inland fisheries are listed in two tables in issues section along with the number of literature records currently contained in GISFish databases. Four recent studies available for download in issues section provide background information on GISFish databases. | | | |

| | | Title | (A comparative study of land use and the degradations of mangroves in Haiti and Columbia, through the analysis of SPOT images). Original title: Apport de la teledetection a haute resolution spatiale a l'etude de l'utilisation de l'espace dans les mangroves d'Haiti et de Colombie | | Author | Menanteau, L.; Thomas, Y.F. | | Date | 1998 | | Content Language(s) | French | | Abstract / Description | A comparative study of land use and the degradation of mangroves through the analysis of SPOT images has been carried out in two parts of the Caribbean : the Bay of Caracol on the Northeast, Atlantic coast of Haiti and the Bay of Barbacoas, on the western littoral of Colombia (to the South of Cartagena de Indias). While the Bay of Caracol is marked by traditional activities, in contrast, that of Barbacoas, has seen its landscape radically transformed by recent development. In less than four years, the Bay of Caracol, with a surface area of 3,990 hectares, has undergone both quantitative and qualitative degradation of its vegetation, due to excessive wood-cutting. The mangrove is cut for charcoal and firing bakershovens as well as, to a lesser extent, for making posts and extracting tannin which has led to an extension of "muddy" areas and a decrease in the size and density of certain ligneous species. The other example, (the Bay of Barbacoas, shows how -- under the influence of multinational corporations/companies -- a speculative activity such as the industrial production of prawns/shrimps Penaeus vannamei and Penaeus stylirostris) in ponds has replaced traditional activities leading to drastic reduction of mangrove. The study of a series of Spot images has allowed the authors to quantify the extension, between 1986 and 1992, of the area covered by aquaculture basins to 687 hectares, of which 457 ha at the expense of mangrove.
