NASO aquaculture maps collection

Collection overview
The main purpose of this map collection is to illustrate, in general, where aquaculture is taking place. Characteristics that accompany the administrative units or individual farms include; cultured species, technology used, culture systems, environments, farm characteristics, production, quantities and values, seed input quantity and characteristics, and main issues (credit, diseases, environmental impact, etc.).

The collection also includes statistics on aquaculture production for 2009 and plans are underway to include statistics related to land and water use in aquaculture during 2012.

The overall objective of this activity is to assist member countries inventory and monitor aquaculture.

Maps can be accessed through the NASO map search page or through the National Aquaculture Sector Overview (NASO) fact sheets.

Data Source
Focal points of the FAO Fisheries and Aquaculture Statistics and Information Service for country statistics are contacted to provide relevant information, however, when focal points are not readily available, then recognized national aquaculture experts and/or aquaculture statisticians from a broad range of institutions who have worked with FAO are consulted.

Collection methods
Aquaculture data are collected at an individual farm level or by administrative units using an MS-Excel submission form. The completed MS-Excel form, once validated, are then used to create the NASO maps.

Confidentiality requirements
Authors (see data source section) who complete the MS-Excel form, can indicate, in the "Data clearance" section of the form, which data can be displayed in NASO fact sheets and which data should be used only for internal use at FAO to improve reported statistics.

Validation methods
Validation is conducted by comparing the total aquaculture production quantities reported in the NASO MS-Excel form by Organism Division (fish, molluscs, crustaceans, seaweeds, other) and Environments (freshwater, brackishwater and marine) against FAO statistics using FAO FishStat Plus software. Any anomalies identified are corrected and updated in the MS-Excel form.
