Rapid access to a broad spectrum of information and fast communication of ideas and data via the Internet are important stimuli to further development of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for aquaculture, a few countries have already taken the initiative of creating  their own inventories of aquaculture at a farm level using GIS.

Examples identified by NASO map program coordinators are presented below and users are encouraged to report of similar initiatives in other countries for inclusion in this Web page (see Contact).


Australia

The Aquaculture Public Register provides a visual display of aquaculture lease and licence sites allowing you to select a site and gain information relating to the associated lease or licence site.

United Kingdom

Scotland's Aquaculture. This Web site is designed to give a single point of access to aquaculture information held by the main regulators of the Scottish aquaculture industry.


United States of America

This Web site contains resources to help shellfish aquaculture growers and managers make better decisions regarding the siting of aquaculture activity in coastal waters. The compilation includes state-by-state information such as permit types, permitting guidance documents, permitting flow-charts, and regulations. In addition, a variety of predictive modeling tools have been developed to assess the individual and cumulative effects of shellfish aquaculture farms on the environment.
