NASO aquaculture maps collection

Rapid access to a broad spectrum of information and fast communication of ideas and data via the Internet are important stimuli to further development of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for aquaculture, a few countries have already taken the initiative of creating  their own inventories of aquaculture at a farm level using GIS.

Examples identified by NASO map program coordinators are presented below and users are encouraged to report of similar initiatives in other countries for inclusion in this Web page (see Contact).


The Aquaculture Public Register provides a visual display of aquaculture lease and licence sites allowing you to select a site and gain information relating to the associated lease or licence site.


The Special Secretariat for Aquaculture and Fisheries in Brazil (SEAP) created a National System for the Authorization of Aquaculture in Union Waters using GIS and Google Earth.


Marine spatial planning is being initiated on a regional basis in a number of areas and is being supported by State, Provincial and Federal governments. The province of New Brunswick now has a mapping system for aquaculture.

DFO, the leasing and licensing authority in the province of Prince Edward Island (PEI), has developed a mapping system for PEI

It is imperative that the aquaculture industry be present as CMSP becomes more widespread to insure their concerns are heard and opportunities for future growth are not lost.


Chiles Industry Association for Salmon created a very interesting Web site that contains a section on “environmental monitoring” and “aquaculture zoning” for the industry.

The salmon "neighborhoods" in detail: TechnoPress (AQUA Publishing House) provides a new online service to make available the location of the Licence Groups. This is made possible by an agreement reached with GeoAustralis (www.geoaustralis.cl), the creator of the Information System for Sustainable Aquaculture (SIAS).


An interesting example on the use of GIS, Remote Sensing and the Internet for assessing health management of shrimp aquaculture is an alert system to monitor shrimp health in the Gulf of Guayaquil.


ACUASESOR. Aquaculture information portal. This tool provides an overview of aquaculture at the national level of the main aquaculture species as well as procedures and government support for this activity. The Web sites is a step-by-step guide for requesting licensing permits for aquaculture ventures.


The Directorate of Fisheries in Norway has created an interactive and very detailed map showing the locations of all the individual farms and their attribute (in Norwegian)


The Department of Aquaculture at the Ministry of Production in Peru has created an online mapping system to inventory and zone aquaculture.

South Africa

The Aquaculture Activities in the Western Cape Web site for South Africa has one of the largest sets of GIS the­matic resources for that area. While it includes admin­is­tra­tive areas, there are also data for estuaries, dams, rivers, marine coastal resources and even shellfish sites.


The Aquaculture Installation Identification System, designed by the General Secretariat of the Sea, allows the user to geographically locate inland and coastal aquaculture structures in Spain.


The The Aquaculture Information Management System (AIMS) in Thailand aims is to improve sustainability and livelihood security of aquaculture stakeholders, improve the quality and traceability of aquaculture products, health assurance to consumers, and trade with aquaculture products.

United Kingdom

Scotland's Aquaculture. This Web site is designed to give a single point of access to aquaculture information held by the main regulators of the Scottish aquaculture industry.
