Aquaculture systems

Aquaculture is practised from the cold waters of the far north and south all the way to the tropics.
Over 360 species of fish, invertebrates and plants are farmed around the world representing a wealth of genetic diversity that helps make aquaculture one of the fastest growing food production sectors.
There are many and diverse water- and land-based systems from subsistence and small-scale to commercial- and industrial-scales.
Extensive and integrated farming systems support the livelihoods of the poorest farmers in developing countries.
