"When we go into that water, we are not sure we shall return. But with HIV, it's no longer automatic death sentence, you can contract HIV and live for 20 more years," says a fisher man at Ggaba landing site. This is the general perception of the fisher folk not only at Ggaba landing site, but at almost all fish landing sites and beaches around Lake victoria.
With over 1500 landing sites and 600,000 people directly working in fisheries and beaches, Lake Victoria is the world's second largest freshwater lake, renown for its rich harvests of tilapia and Nile perch. However, the lake basin has also gained a reputation for having the highest HIV-prevalence rate in the country.
