Fisheries Global Information System M a j o r o u t p u t | | | Integrated web-based dissemination system
| During the project life span, FIGIS has been brought into the real distributed web and GIS based information system it claimed to become. Visits on the FIGIS web site grew from 7500 in May 2003 to nearly 14000 in December 2004. The current internet system tightly integrates the following modules:- the Fisheries Topics and Issues module consists of 300 fact sheets conveying to opinion makers and advisors of policy makers policy notes and strategic summaries about issues faced by the fisheries sector;
- this top-level module introduces 8 thematic modules disseminating more technical information and background data and to scientists, students, or analysts: through various query tools (topic trees, search forms, or graphical query assistants), users can access data base records or fact sheets displaying subject knowledge in a systematic and consistent way, including statistics or maps built on the fly, as well as information from external systems. The wealth of information here consists of 470 species fact sheets, 237 fishing techniques fact sheets, over 1500 stocks and resources units inventoried and under validation for presentation to the public, 3200 records in the species introduction data base, 6443 records from 17 countries in the High Seas Vessels Authorization Record and about 20 country case studies for the new Country profile prototype. From the pages generated by these modules, tailored and relevant access to information held in external systems such as Fishbase, SIPAM, the UNAtlas of the Oceans, or in a near future ASFA, has been enabled thanks to the systematic application of standards;
- the Institutions and Programmes module is the newly released one, presenting yet some of the Fisheries Department programmes following a consistent and homogeneous style. IPOA module: SIDP programme, REBYC project, 4 IPOAs sub-sites;
- supporting information resources were also integrated and cover 7 global on-line fisheries statistical data bases, seamless access to the FAO virtual library and the meetings and events system, the Fisheries glossary of terms and dynamic mapping module displaying species and stocks distribution maps dynamically, as well as spatial distribution of Tuna catch statistics (from the Tuna Atlas data set); this mapping module has been recently extended to handle a geographical query tool, and is configurable to fit many other applications; Libraries of maps are finally stored in the Geonetwork system.
- Other tools for internal use include the institution/mailing list module.
