Its objective is to reduce the environmental impact arising from commercial shrimp trawl fisheries in tropical countries, and particularly to minimize:- the capture and discard of unwanted catch and bycatch (including non-fish species such as turtles), and
- the impact of shrimp-trawling on bottom habitat.

The project aims to do so through:- the introduction of more appropriate fishing technologies,
- improved legislation and
- improved management frameworks (including control and enforcement strategies).

The project is global in scope, but concentrates on the four main tropical regions of the world:- Latin America and the Caribbean,
- Africa,
- Near East and
- Asia.
