Objectives
Its objective is to reduce the environmental impact arising from commercial shrimp trawl fisheries in tropical countries, and particularly to minimize:
  • the capture and discard of unwanted catch and bycatch (including non-fish species such as turtles), and
  • the impact of shrimp-trawling on bottom habitat.
Approaches
The project aims to do so through:
  • the introduction of more appropriate fishing technologies,
  • improved legislation and
  • improved management frameworks (including control and enforcement strategies).
Duration
The project will run for 5 years, from July 2002 until September 2008.
Coverage
The project is global in scope, but concentrates on the four main tropical regions of the world:
  • Latin America and the Caribbean,
  • Africa,
  • Near East and
  • Asia.
