Redworms used for vermicomposting of organic wastes
©FAO/Irene Nurzia Humburg. Redworms, Eisenia fetida|foetida, are a species of earthworm commonly used for worm composting, or vermicomposting. This species naturally feeds on decaying organic matter and tolerates the conditions found in intensive compost operations, both in domestic and industrial operations . The resulting residue, or vermicompost, is a valuable soil amendment rich in nutrients. Integrated aquaculture farms can make use of vermicomposting of filtered fish wastes, and for feeding the worms to fish or other livestock.
