Farmer tending mussels in an Integrated Aquaculture System
Integrated Multitrophic Aquaculture is the co-culture of multiple species at different trophic levels within the same culture environment. Adding filter-feeding or extractive species allows the reuse of waste products from one species as a feed source for another. In this example of freshwater IMTA, waste water from carp ponds is channeled into treatment canals where pearl mussels (either Hyriopsis cumingii or Cristaria plicata) are grown. These bivalves take up particulates in the water, thereby cleaning it, before the water returns to the environment. The freshwater pearls are used in the fashon, cosmetic and medical industry. ©FAO/Matthias Halwart. Editorial use only. Photo credit must be given.
