Main purpose and content

In a continuing effort to achieve aquaculture sustainability through dissemination of up-to-date information on the status and trends of the sector, FAO publishes Aquaculture Regional Reviews and a Global Synthesis about every 5 years, starting in 1997.

These reviews aim at providing a comprehensive and reliable perspective, over the past 5 years, of the aquaculture status and trends in the main regions of the world, and globally, emphasizing salient issues and success stories, highlighting future trends, and considering likely scenarios.

Up-to-date information on the status and trends of the sector, at regional and global levels, was developed from national, regional and global datasets, and supplemented with expert opinion and literature review.

The Regional Reviews and the Global Synthesis can be of pertinent use to national governments, regional organizations, policy makers, farmers, investors, civil society organizations, research and training institutions and the general public.

Each regional review and the global synthesis contains nine chapters

  • Social and economic background.
  • General characteristics of the sector.
  • Resources, services and technologies.
  • Aquaculture and environmental integrity.
  • Markets and trade.
  • Contribution of aquaculture to food security and social and economic development.
  • External pressures on the sector.
  • Governance and management of the sector.
  • Aquaculture contribution to the FAO strategic objectives.
