| Abstract:
| The body known immediately before the commencement of this subsection as the National Food Authority is continued in existence as the Australia New Zealand Food Authority. The Authority is a body corporate with perpetual succession. The functions of the Authority include: (a) to prepare draft standards and draft variations of standards and to make recommendations to the Council in respect of those draft standards or draft variations; (b) in accordance with this Act, to develop draft codes of practice and draft variations of codes of practice for industry and to review codes of practice; (c) to develop guidelines to assist the interpretation of the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code on its own initiative or in consultation; (d) to review standards; (e) in consultation with the States and Territories, or on its own initiative, to coordinate the surveillance by the States, the Territories and any other bodies or persons of food available in Australia; and (f) to develop codes of practice for industry (in Australia and in New Zealand) on any matter that may be included in a standard (sect. 7). Powers of the Authority are outlined in section 8. Section 9 outlines matters that may be included in standards and variations of standards, whereas section 10 lays down the priority of objectives of the Authority in developing standards and variations of standards. Sections 12 to 39 make provisions for matters relating to applications for development or variation of a standard. The remaining provisions of the Act deal with internal matters of the Authority.
