    Western Atlantic Ocean; coast of South America from Southern Brazil, Uruguay to central Argentina.
    Habitat and Biology
    Found usually over muddy and sandy bottomsin coastal waters to about 60 m depths,and estuaries where the nursery and feeding grounds are locate.Forms schools.Juveniles feed on benthic migratory crustaceans and sessile boring molluscs (ocasionally fishes). Adults feed mostly on fishes.Attains 20 years old (Cousseau & Perrotta, 1998).
    Size
    Attains 65 cm; common 35 to 45 cm.
    Interest to Fisheries
    Foodfish which is usually marketed fresh and filled. The total catch reported for this species to FAO for 1999 was 19 588 t. The countries with the largest catches were Argentina (11 107 t) and Uruguay (8 481 t).Caught with bottom trawls.
