Dimension: Nominal catches
Type: Quantity
Unit: Tonnes
Unit: Number of animals
Description: The "nominal catches" concept refers to the landings converted to a live weight basis; the closely related concept "landings" refers to the quantities on a landed weight basis. In many fisheries the landed quantities are identical to the quantities caught, but there are many instances where the catches on board fishing vessels or factory ships are gutted, eviscerated, filleted, salted, dried, etc., or reduced to meals, oil, etc. The data on the landings of such species and products require conversion by accurate yield rates (conversion factors) to establish the live weight equivalents (nominal catches) at the time of their capture. The database does not include quantities discarded after catching.
More info: Volume is measured in tonnes for all items except aquatic mammals, alligators and crocodiles, which are measured by number of animals. Weights are of the whole animal (live weight.)
Key: Aquatic species
Тип: Species
Code system: Scientific name (at the species, genus, family or higher taxonomic levels);
Code system: FAO English, French or Spanish name;
Code system: Inter-agency 3-alpha code;
Code system: Taxonomic code (the taxonomic code descriptors are those of FAO's Aquatic Sciences and Fisheries Information System.)
Aggregation: The species items (approximately 1600) are arranged in 50 ISSCAAP groups of species, which constitute the 9 ISSCAAP divisions (or Major groups) of the FAO 'International Standard Statistical Classification of Aquatic Animals and Plants' (ISSCAAP.) The 50 ISSCAAP groups of species can also be grouped in:
Aggregation: FAOSTAT group classification;
Aggregation: Yearbook Main Groups classification;
Aggregation: Taxonomic classification consisting of 4 levels of aggregation (Orders, Families, Genera and Species.)
Key: Country or Area
Тип: Geographic
More info: The term also covers territories, cities, land areas, as well as provinces, districts, enclaves, exclaves and other parts of territories or combinations of countries or areas
Code system: FAO multilingual code of not more than twelve characters used for statistical purposes;
Code system: Country or area names in English, French or Spanish;
Code system: ISO 3-alpha code;
Code system: ISO 2-alpha code;
Code system: FAO three-digit numerical code;
Aggregation: Continents;
Aggregation: Continents and regions (each continent is divided into regions);
Aggregation: Economic class (developed countries; developing countries);
Aggregation: Economic groups (developing countries; transition markets; industrialized countries.)
Key: Major inland and marine fishing areas
Тип: Geographic
Code system: FAO name in English, French or Spanish;
Code system: FAO two digit code.
Aggregation: The twenty-six major fishing areas internationally established for fishery statistical purposes, consist of: seven major inland fishing areas, covering the inland waters of continents; nineteen major marine fishing areas grouped by Oceans (Atlantic, Indian, Pacific and Southern Oceans) with their adjacent seas; and Oceans/suboceans (suboceans are climatic belts within oceans.)
Aggregation: Two additional areas (i.e.) "Fishing area 98: Antarctic, pelagic" and "Fishing area 99: Outside the Antarctic" are used only for marine mammals data.
