| | | Dimension: | Nominal catches | | Type: | Quantity | | Unit: | Tonnes | | : | The "nominal catches" concept refers to the landings converted to a live weight basis; the closely related concept "landings" refers to the quantities on a landed weight basis. In many fisheries the landed quantities are identical to the quantities caught, but there are many instances where the catches on board fishing vessels or factory ships are gutted, eviscerated, filleted, salted, dried, etc., or reduced to meals, oil, etc. The data on the landings of such species and products require conversion by accurate yield rates (conversion factors) to establish the live weight equivalents (nominal catches) at the time of their capture. The database does not include quantities discarded after catching. |

| Key: | Major inland and marine fishing areas | | Type: | Geographic | | Code system: | FAO name in English, French or Spanish; | | Code system: | FAO code. | | Aggregation: | For statistical purposes the FAO Major Fishing Area 34 - Southeast Atlantic has been split into five subareas, further sub-divided into eleven divisions:
47 1 - WESTERN COASTAL subarea, which includes six divisions:
47 1 1 - Cape Palmeirinhas
47 1 2 - Cape Salinas
47 1 3 - Cunene
47 1 4 - Cape Cross
47 1 5 - Orange River
47 1 6 - Cape of Good Hope
47 2 - AGULHAS COASTAL subarea, which includes two divisions:
47 2 1 - Middle Agulhas
47 2 2 - Eastern Agulhas
47 3 - SOUTHERN OCEANIC subarea
47 3 0 - Southern oceanic
47 4 - TRISTAN DA CUNHA subarea
47 4 0 - Tristan da Cunha
47 5 - ST HELENA and ASCENSION subarea
47 5 0 - St Helena and Ascension
Tuna catches are not allocated according to statistical divisions and are grouped together into a division named "47 0 0 - Tunas". Three other divisions, namely "47 1 9 - Western coastal, not known", "47 2 9 - Agulhas coastal, not known" and "47 9 0 - Not known", contain catches for which is not exactly known the statistical division.
