The Fisheries and Aquaculture Department, in its overall aim to promote sustainable fisheries from harvest to table, focuses on optimizing utilization of captured and cultured fish to extract maximum value from the fishery resources while supporting sustainable fishery practices.

Activities are shaped around overall global fish utilization and aim at:

• reducing post-harvest losses: with a strong accent on safety and quality - including of aquaculture products - value-adding and small-scale processing
  
• trade and marketing: particularly on improving domestic fish markets and on market access requirements
  
• trade and the environment: including all international agreements from WTO and CITES decisions, to labelling and certification requirements, to food safety issues and access to market information

The FAO Fisheries and Aquaculture Department produces codes of practice and standards related to product safety, use, marketing and responsible trade.
