Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nationsfor a world without hunger

FAO has been very active in developing integrated information systems, to facilitate the fulfilment of its mandate and to assist its members and their organizations in their policy and management tasks. These systems have been developed through international collaboration through projects in which FAO covers a wide range of roles, as initiator, catalyst, main implementer, simple collaborator or facilitator.

The systems include:

  • FIGIS (Fisheries Global Information System): developed by FAO to improve and interconnect all its databases and products. FIGIS is also the “engine” powering the Fisheries and Aquaculture Department Web site;
  • FIRMS (Fisheries Resources Monitoring System): a global system proposed, developed and served by FAO but elaborated in close collaboration through an international partnership network involving all the main regional fishery management organizations. The system containshigh-quality information on the global monitoring and management of fishery marine resources, including resources inventories and summaries on their status and trends.
  • FISH INFOnetwork (FIN): consists of the GLOBEFISH coordinating unit of the FAO Fisheries and Aquaculture Department and seven independent intergovernmental and governmental organizations: INFOPESCA in South and Central America; INFOFISH in Asia and the Pacific; INFOPECHE in Africa; INFOSA in Southern Africa; INFOSAMAK in Arab countries and EUROFISH in Eastern and Central Europe. The network provides the private industry and governments with, inter alia, meeting services, training seminars and consulting services, information, publications.
  • United Nations Atlas of the Oceans: a collaborative portal on the sustainable development of the oceans, conceived, developed and maintained by FAO is populated and updated regularly by partner UN agencies who have ocean-related mandates, as well with a number of non-UN institutions.
  • Others: the Department has also developed and maintains other knowledge bases such as the Fishery and Aquaculture Country Profiles and the national overviews, updated with the collaboration of international or national experts.
