Capacity building involves developing courses and training materials on current methodologies used in inland fisheries that will enable participants to work independently with fisheries management issues, and participate actively in the formulation of management plans in the region where they work.

Technical assistance to member countries and Regional fisheries bodies

Through TCPs (Technical Cooperation Programme) and unilateral or multi-lateral funded field projects, FIRI provide technical information, advice and training to member countries and regional fisheries bodies in the field of inland fisheries. There are 10-20 requests or projects implemented annually. The output from this activity will be used by fishermen, resource managers and policy makers to improve production, conservation and policy making on inland fisheries. The immediate results are expected to be improved rural livelihoods and food security through better inland fisheries management, biodiversity and environmental conservation.
