NANSIS is a Survey Information System for logging, editing and analysis of scientific trawl survey data (trawl-catch data and length-frequency data).
It provides summaries of selected subsets of data defined by trawl station numbers, species, genera, families or userdefined species groups.
Tables of catch, mean catch rate and variance are provided for user selected subsets of trawl stations. Subsets can be defined by trawl station number, gear type, depth, geographical sector, purpose of investigation, and validity tests of the trawl hauls.
Swept area calculations (mean densities per n.mi2) can be made for groups of data by user defined limits, for example, by station limits, by geographical limits and by bottom depth strata.
NANSIS contains routines for transferring data to formats accessible to other program packages, such as STATGRAPHICS, LFSA, ELEFAN, the CORNELL ECOLOGY PROGRAM SERIES and CANOCO.
The system can handle data from a great number of surveys or projects.
Although originally intended only for R/V Dr FRIDTJOF NANSEN surveys, NANSIS is general and can be used for other trawl fishery resources surveys.
The multitude of species in tropical waters is handled through a mnemonic species code system. These species codes are converted into scientific or local names in the printouts using projectbased species name catalogues.
An expanded version of NANSIS includes programs for logging, editing and analysis of acoustic data from the SIMRAD QD integrator, and the SIMRAD EK500 system. These programs, however, are specific to the equipment of R/V Dr FRIDTJOF NANSEN and are not covered by the present manual.
Key Features:
- Entry of trawl data, editing, listing, initial analysis and export of catch data to other programs.
- Entry of species names to catalogue, editing and listing.
- Entry of length frequency data, edit, listing, histogram printing, and export to other programs
- Biomass estimation by the swept-area method or based on acoustic data.
- Acoustic data edit, printout and backup programs. Programs in the acoustic menu are in general made for RV "Dr. Fridtjof Nansen".
- Utilities. This includes "exit to MSDOS, data backup and starting of other NANSIS programs not included in the menu. The menu also contains data editor and browser.
- Project selection, listing and initialization.
System Requirements:
NANSIS runs on IBM compatible microcomputers. It can be configured for colour EGA/VGA screens, but runs on monochrome monitors as default.
For some parts of NANSIS a printer must be attached to the parallel port. The printer must accept the IBM printer commands and the IBM expanded character set. Alternatively, a laser printer emulating HPLaser II may be used, but with the IBM character set selected.
NANSIS assumes the microcomputer to have a hard disk with at least 2 Mb free disk space.
NANSIS is programmed in the database language TAS, a relational data base system developed originally for mercantile use (Business Tools, Inc., 1986).
This databases system does in principle require a licence. However the Nansen project has bought an unlimited runtime licence for the NANSIS application. This means that the included software can be copied free of charge as long as it is used only for running NANSIS.Price $US 40
