Fisheries global information networks

  • Aquatic Sciences and Fisheries Abstracts (ASFA) is an abstracting and indexing service covering the world''s literature on the science, technology, management, and conservation of marine, brackish water, and freshwater resources and environments, including their socio-economic and legal aspects.
  • The Coordinating Working Party on Fishery Statistics (CWP) provides a mechanism to coordinate fishery statistical programmes of regional fishery bodies and other inter-governmental organizations with a remit for fishery statistics.
  • FishBase is a relational database with information on fishes to cater to different professionals such as research scientists, fisheries managers, zoologists and many more.
  • Library and information networks provide a forum for the sharing of information resources and expertise. Networks provide mechanisms for strengthening individual libraries, for providing cost-effective access to a wider range of information resources and for the effective dissemination of information to a wider audience.
  • The Fisheries Resources Monitoring System (FIRMS) is a partnership of intergovernmental fisheries organizations that share a wide range of high-quality information on the global monitoring and management of marine fishery resources.

  • The UN Atlas of the Oceans is an Internet portal providing information relevant to the sustainable development of the oceans. It is designed for policy-makers who need to become familiar with ocean issues and for scientists, students and resource managers who need access to databases and approaches to sustainability. The UN Atlas can also provide the ocean industry and stakeholders with pertinent information on ocean matters. Development has been under the lead of the FAO Fisheries and Aquaculture Department with additional participation from national agencies.

Trade information networks

  • The FISHINFONetwork (FIN) consists of 7 independent intergovernmental organisations as well as FAO GLOBEFISH, a unit situated in the Fisheries Department of the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the UN (FAO). Created to assist the fishery sector particularly in developing countries and countries in transition, the network provides services to private industry and to governments.

Regional Aquaculture Networks

  • NACA''s role in bringing aquaculture development and aquatic resources management to address more effectively poverty, hunger and resource conservation.
  • NACEE is a voluntary association of Central and Eastern European aquaculture institutions, in which all members maintain their full independence. The main mandate of this network is to facilitate that the Research & Development sphere in Central-Eastern Europe be an integral part of the European Research Area.
