In order to better monitor and control fishing activities and prevent illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing, it is essential to have a list of vessels operating in deep-sea fisheries. Part of Resolution 61/105 on Sustainable Fisheries relates to the management of bottom fisheries in areas beyond national jurisdiction and calls upon States to submit information to FAO on vessels authorized to fish in deep-sea fisheries in those areas.

It further calls upon States to make publicly available, through the FAO, a list of vessels authorized to conduct deep-sea fishing in areas beyond national jurisdiction, and the measures they have adopted to regulate their operations. FAO compiles and updates information and makes it publicly accessible through FAO’s Fishing Vessel Finder database which allows users to utilize various search options to find details on individual vessels.
