The overall goal of the project is to contribute to the development of capacity of member countries in the implementation of ecosystem approaches to fisheries management (EAF).

The project has been promoting the development of skills for evaluating the nature and impact of interactions between species that are directly or indirectly affected by fisheries and the importance of these for fisheries management. This includes interactions with marine mammals, but also covers all other types of ecological interactions of significance for ensuring sustainable and responsible fisheries. The project has been also promoting the development of capacity in the implementation of EAF, with particular emphasis on assisting countries in the identification and reconciliation of multiple objectives with fisheries in an ecosystem. In this context the project makes use of and promotes the FAO Guidelines on Ecosystem Approaches to Fisheries, within the broader considerations of the FAO Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries.
