Training material is being developed, drawing on the FAO Guidelines for EAF and other guidelines and manuals on the Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries. The training material, prepared with the assistance of experts in ecosystem approaches, experienced trainers and educationists, is designed to be used both under expert guidance and independently.

Building capacity and the development of new knowledge is combined by providing technical assistance, including formal training courses, to selected developing countries. This involves field case studies where suitable experts are working with local counterparts in assessing the status and dynamics of their multispecies communities and fisheries and using the information to develop possible management objectives.  
The beneficiary countries have been selected on the basis of their interest in the project, their potential to benefit from it, and to ensure reasonable global coverage by the project.

The Project has funded several activities to achieve the programmed objectives. These activities, including workshops, expert panels, manuals, guidelines, research, etc., are here reported under three main topics:
