 Floods are common
occurrences in many countries. In some cases they are
beneficial to agriculture, but unexpected floods resulting
from abnormally heavy rainfall, sometimes hundreds of
kilometres away, can be devastating: human lives, dwellings,
livestock, infrastructure and communications can be swept
away in a matter of hours.
