A young widow fends off in-laws' threats to take her landGwanda, Uganda Eleanor is a 24-year-old widow. Yet she has three young children of her own to support as well as the son of her late husband, who died at the age of 36, most probably from AIDS. And now she has to fend off her in-laws who are trying to take her land. Life has been difficult for some time. While her husband was ill, Eleanor nursed him. That meant she spent less time in the fields and was unable to grow enough maize for her family's needs. Her sugar-cane yields have also been low. In a bid to improve the crop she employed part-time workers to irrigate it, but she is hampered by the lack of know-how. Still, Eleanor strongly believes that, together with her late husband's 16-year-old son, she can manage the farm successfully in the future. Well she might, if she can manage to ward off the greedy advances of her in-laws who have their eyes fixed on her land.
