Q&A on Food Coalition.

News

Global alliance proposed by Italy and led by FAO aims to put zero hunger goal back on track after pandemic.

In Focus

FAO’s Chief Economist maps the ways the world can mitigate shocks to agriculture and food systems.

In only six months, COVID-19 has reached every part of the world with long-term effects on food systems, food security and nutrition.

While 690 million people in 2019 went to bed hungry, the pandemic might push between 83 to 132 million more people to hunger in 2020.

This is a Global problem that needs global response and joint action, in order to avoid the health crisis from becoming a food crisis.

The Food Coalition proposed by the Government of Italy, and led by FAO, is a multi-stakeholder global alliance, a network of networks for a unified global action in response to COVID-19.

The Food Coalition will be an advocate for strengthening agri-food systems around the world and will raise awareness, mobilize financial resources and technical expertise, and source innovation and knowledge in support of the countries most in need.

TCP - Technical Cooperation Programme

VC - Voluntary Contribution

The Food Coalition will

Mobilize resources, expertise and innovation

Advocate for a joint and coordinated COVID-19 response

Promote dialogue and exchange of knowledge and expertise among countries

Work towards solution-oriented plans and programmes

Expand and strengthen the international cooperation and partnership for a longer term impact

The Food Coalition’s support for COVID-19

As a response to COVID-19, FAO launched a comprehensive response and recovery programme designed around 7 priority areas of work to help countries not only address the immediate effects of the pandemic but to prepare for recovery and building back better.  The Food Coalition will leverage high-level political, financial resources and technical expertise in support of the response and recovery programme and, with focus on country level needs and demands.
