COVID-19 and urban food systems in the European Union

24/06/2020

Cities and local governments play a key role in ensuring food security and improved nutrition. The COVID-19 pandemic is heavily affecting them and it poses a number of challenges that are disrupting urban food systems worldwide.

In this context, FAO will meet the European Union to present the Urban Food Agenda initiative, which is aimed at achieving food security and nutrition in urban and peri-urban areas, and the latest results from the Questionnaire ‘Food systems and COVID-19’. The latter has been launched in April, assessing more than 800 cities worldwide to monitor the impact of COVID-19 on municipalities and improve measures taken by local governments.

The timely release of the EU Farm to Fork Strategy is an opportunity to discuss possible synergies for building resilience to reduce future shocks in urban food systems.
