Urban Food Systems to be debated at the Committee on World Food Security

06/10/2022

On Wednesday 12 October 2022, the Committee on World Food Security (CFS) will host a Side Event dedicated to urban food systems during the premises of the next CFS-50.

The event - Empowering cities and local governments towards sustainable and inclusive urban and territorial food systems transformation – is jointly organized by FAO, and the Urban Food Systems Working Group.

It is one of the 32 selected special events, which are specifically planned to enrich and complement the CFS 50 Plenary and give partners and other stakeholders an opportunity to highlight their work.

The meeting will take place from 8.30 AM to 9.45 AM (CET) in hybrid modality. It will be physically hosted in the FAO HQ (Green Room), but also available in the Zoom Platform for remote participants (and speakers) at this link.

The focus of the event is on the empowerment of city and local governments to transform urban and local/territorial food systems.  As such, the event will address the issues of governance and the links between national and local actions to transform food systems towards a sustainable path.. The event will also focus on ways in which national governments but also  regional and global bodies, fora and platforms can create an enabling environment for local governments and other local stakeholders to make a fundamental contribution to sustainable food systems transformation.

The debate at the side event aims at identifying multi-level governance structures, which better reflect the importance and potential of urban and territorial food systems and support their transformation.

Specific Objectives of the Event

  1. Sub-national governments recognized as key players for achieving sustainable food systems transformation
  2.  National governments and other stakeholders discussing ways to strengthen the ecosystem of support to local/territorial/city-region/urban food systems stakeholders.
  3.  Raise awareness on the importance of strengthening alliances and coalitions on urban and territorial food systems
