Country information about GM food safety assessment
Introduction national biosafety regulations:
the focal point for Belize Clearing House is Mr. Fracisco Gutierrez, focal point for the Cartagena Protocol is Dr. Natalie Gibson. Both are from the Belize Agricultural Health Authority. I was nominated as the focal point for GM food safety risk assessment. the Forstry department is responsible for CBD. Currently Belize is not importing GM planting materials unless risk assessment has been conducted. As of today no food safety risk assessment had been conducted in Belize for GM foods.

Belize has draft Biosafety Bill and approved policy on use and imports of GM. the bio safety council is the technical advisory committee. under the regional Caribbean Bio safety project various activities will be implemented:
review of the Bio safety Bill, updating the policy, Re-activation of the bio safety council and establishment of laboratory capacity for detection of LMOs and finally public education program on LMOs.
