Summary:
The Czech Republic is a Member State of the European Union, and the regulation of GM foods takes place at EU level. Safety assessments are carried out by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). Assessments include a detailed study of potential for toxic, nutritional and allergenic effects. During the evaluation of applications EFSA consults the Competent Authorities of the Member States. Authorisations are issued by the European Commission on an EU-wide basis.

The risk assessment of genetically modified food and feed containing stacked transformation events obtained by conventional crossing is based on a risk assessment of each single transformation event. In addition, the risk assessment of stacked transformation events includes an assessment of the following aspects: (a) stability of the transformation events; (b) expression of the transformation events; (c) potential synergistic or antagonistic effects resulting from the combination of the transformation events.
