Sri Lanka is an island in the Indian ocean. Total area is 65,610 km2 of which 4.4% is covered with water bodies. It has a population of 20,277,597 and population density is 323/km2. The climate is tropical and warm, due to the moderating effects of ocean winds. Under the food act of Sri Lanka regulation on production, importation, marketing of GM food are controlled. Pre-market approval need to be obtained for GM foods
