Country introduction
Summary:

SOLOMON ISLANDS COUNTRY PROFILE ON GM FOOD

The Solomon Islands Government through the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, Disaster Management & Meteorology has developed policies and regulations related to biosafety to protect its biological diversity against GMO threats. Some of the threats include GM plants, animals and GM food ingredients. Other ministries also have policies and regulations relating to GMOs, food safety and biosafety in general. However, most of the regulations do not specifically address GM food safety assessment.

Solomon Islands lack the capacity to monitor and assess the introduction of GM foods into the country. The country does not have the appropriate technology required for the proper assessment of food products derived from GMOs. The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources and the Ministry of Health and Medical Services are yet to develop regulations governing the monitoring and assessment of GM Food.
