Commodity: Corn / Maize
Traits: Insect resistance
Brazil
Name of product applicant: Dow AgroSciences Sementes & Biotecnologi
Summary of application:

Dow AgroSciences Sementes & Biotecnologia Brasil Ltda., requested to CTNBio an opinion on the biosafety of genetically modified corn MON 89034 x MON 88017 x TC1507 x DAS-59122-7, result of the combination by classic genetic crossing of the singular events MON 89034, MON 88017 , TC1507 and DAS-59122-7. Event MON 89034 contains genes cry2Ab2 and cry1A.105, which encode proteins CRY2Ab2 and CRY1A.105, which control the lepidopteran pest of corn. Event MON 88017 contains cry3Bb1 and cp4 epsps genes that encode CRY3Bb1 and CP4 EPSPS proteins, which control pest coleopterans and confer tolerance to the herbicide glyphosate, respectively. Event TC1507 contains cry1F and pat genes that encode CRY1F and PAT proteins, which control lepidopteran pests and confer tolerance to the herbicide glufosinate ammonium, respectively. The DAS-59122-7 event contains the genes cry34Ab1, cry35Ab1 and pat, which encode the proteins CRY34Ab1, CRY35Ab1 that control pest coleopterans and the protein PAT, which confers tolerance to the herbicide glufosinate ammonium.

Country introduction:

Brazil had the first biosafety law approved in 1995. After the identification of the need to improve the biosafety system of Brazilian genetically modified organisms, a new law was published. The Law 11.105 / 05 establishes a technical committee dedicated to the analysis of the safety aspects of genetically modified organisms and a council of ministers that is dedicated to the analysis of the socioeconomic aspects of the commercial release of genetically modified organisms. In this context, Brazil already has several commercial products that involve genetically modified organisms (plants, human and veterinary vaccines, microorganisms for fuel production) and products derived from new genetic modification techniques.
