The work of the food safety/ quality programme is highly varied. It covers an extremely wide range of issues and takes place in a number of different contexts, including: field projects, training events, advisory or assessment missions (sometimes under emergency situations), expert meetings as well as deskwork to prepare and/or review various types of technical documents.
We often work in partnership with national and international bodies and organizations where such partnership is mutually beneficial and where there is a compatibility of mandate and guiding principles. There are a number of modalities by which partnerships can be based.
We often are in search of consultants to work with us for short-term assignments or for longer-term project posts. Qualified experts are encouraged to apply for available consultancies/ positions.
Scientists have an opportunity to contribute to international panels of independent experts set up to provide advice on specific issues. We apply strict rules to the selection of experts to safeguard the integrity and independence of the resulting advice. See FAO/WHO framework for more information.
Development and review of Food Safety and Food Science curricula is one of the main themes of the collaboration with IFT which among other excepted goals, aims to support FAO meeting the increasing requests from tertiary institutions in developing countries for advice on their food safety and food science programmes.
FAO is working with the European Commission to continue strengthening countries participation in the standard setting process of the Codex Alimentarius Commission.
Food safety is one of the components of the FAO/EU programme on Improved Global Governance for Hunger Reduction, launched in 2012.
Ongoing FAO pilot projects in Uganda and Thailand are at the base of the guidelines that are being developed to improve food safety decision-making based on a consideration of relevant criteria (health, trade, economics, food security) at national level.
