Egypt: The story of Rashad Sayed
Eco-friendly roof gardens of Egypt
A TeleFood project helps a poor Egyptian family cultivate vegetables free of pesticides on the roof of their house. Produce improves family nutrition and surplus is sold to increase income and pay school fees.
After an hour drive across the desert, the FAO reporting team arrives in Fayum, 100 kilometres from the pyramids of Ghizeh. Irrigated by the Nile, this lush area produces all sorts of vegetable and fruit. Its inhabitants look peaceful and contented. The car makes its way through narrow streets, welcomed by a group of young school boys and girls in uniform. Objective: to visit a roof garden project financed by FAO's TeleFood programme.
