Egypt: The story of Waël Abdessalam
Raising rabbits in an Egyptian village
Waël Abdessalam, an Egyptian teenager, and his family benefit from a TeleFood rabbit raising project that helps improve their diets and family income. The story takes place in El-Hamidiyah el-Gadida, a small village in the Fayum area, about 100 kilometres southwest of Cairo.
Hello, my name is Waël. I am 17. I live in a small village in the Fayum area with my mother Inayat, who is 55, my father Mohamed, who is 57, and my three brothers, Hamada, 23, Mahmud, 20, and Ahmed, 10.
Four years ago, my father built another floor on our two-storey house. At that time, through his job as an agriculture extension agent, he heard about FAO's TeleFood initiative for raising rabbits to improve farmers' diets and income in this area. And since we had additional space on the third floor, we decided to get involved.
