TELEFOOD: TSUNAMI RECONSTRUCTION

HOW TO HELP

Millions of farmers and fisher folk in coastal areas have been affected by the tsunami disaster. Poor farming and fishing communities need urgent assistance to restart productive activities. FAO is working with the affected countries and donors to help the tsunami victims rebuild their lives and ensure country-wide food security.

You can join FAO relief action in the field by giving your support to TeleFood programme.

Donations to TeleFood fund small, self-contained fisheries, agriculture and livestock projects that help poor families produce more food.

The projects, which cost between US$5 000 and US$10 000, pay for inputs such as fishing gear, seeds and simple farming tools; not a penny is spent on administrative costs.

With your help,TeleFood will be able to provide:

• small boats and fishing gear for the fishing communities to resume fishing.
• material to dig wells, fingerlings for stocking the pond and fish food to resume acquaculture activities.
• seeds (such as rice and other cereal crops), tools (shovels, hoes, watercans) and other agricultural inputs for the rapid rehabilitation of food crop production for the next season.

Beneficiaries will be fisherfolk and other community groups. TeleFood donations will also support the setting up of school gardens to allow children of affected communities to have access to nutritionally balanced meals while giving them the strength to attend school and learn how to feed themselves.
