Sub-regional workshop for East and South-East Asia

JAPAN, 25-29 June 2018

The Global Forest Resources Assessment 2020 sub-regional workshop for East and South-East Asia took place in Tokyo, Japan 25-29 June 2018. The workshop was hosted by the Forestry Agency of Japan and it attracted FRA National Correspondents from 13 countries (Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Malaysia, Maldives, Myanmar, New Zealand, Republic of Korea, Timor Leste, Thailand, The Philippines, Viet Nam).

The first three days of the workshop focused on FRA 2020 reporting methodology and use of the new on-line platform to fill the reporting tables and access freely available geospatial data sets. During the first day, the participants had also the possibility to present the status of their country reports and raise any specific issues they had faced during the reporting. On the third day, colleagues from the Forestry Agency of Japan, Forestry and Forest Products Research Institute (FFPRI) and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JAICA) presented Japan’s experiences in national forest monitoring both domestically and in international context.

Fourth day of the workshop was dedicated for a field trip to Yamanashi Prefecture to familiarize the participants with local forest resources and their management. The participants visited also Fujisan World Heritage Center and a planted forest site in Narusawa village.
The fifth day of the workshop focused on informing the participants on the Remote Sensing components of the FRA 2020 together with a presentation on the Global Forest Survey project, which aims to establish a global field inventory data repository.
