Global Forest Resources Assessments

Global Forest Observations Initiative (GFOI)

The Global Forest Observations Initiative (GFOI) is a voluntary partnership of countries and institutions aimed at coordinating the delivery of international support in forest monitoring. Through collaborative action, GFOI partners aim to facilitate a large and targeted package of support in forest monitoring to help meet developing country needs. This includes coordinated training, the development and dissemination of guidance, targeted research and assistance in the accessibility and use of key datasets and tools for monitoring.

FAO is one of the Lead partners of the Initiative and hosts the GFOI Office under the umbrella of the FRA Programme.

Capacity-building Initiative for Transparency (CBIT)

"Building global capacity to increase transparency in the forest sector (CBIT-Forest)” is one of the four global projects approved under the GEF’s Capacity Building Initiative for Transparency (CBIT). FAO and GEF team up to improve transparency of forest and land-use data under the Paris Agreement.

The project will be implemented over the coming two years by the FAO’s Global Forest Resources Assessment and National Forest Monitoring teams and will also seek close collaboration with the GFOI and other partners, including the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the CBIT Global Coordination Platform. CBIT forest flyer is available in English, French and Spanish
