Overview - Guatemala

In November 2001, the Instituto Nacional de Bosques (INAB) in Guatemala requested technical and financial assistance from FAO. Following this request, FAO fielded a mission to Guatemala in early 2002 and formulated a project for NFA. The project was approved and started in April 2002. The objectives of the project were to assess the forest and tree resources in the country and provide information for policy makers at the national level. Guatemala is a pioneer country in forest and tree resources assessment at the national level. It has completed its first NFA; created the most complete reliable set of information; developed a strong national capacity to update it; and put in place a national system for long term monitoring.
