FAO Forestry country profiles - forest management
Objectives
Management objectives for the forests of Kiribati are specified in broader environmental and development planing documents. For example, Kiribati has implemented seven National Development Plans (NDPs). Through recent NDPs, the Government of Kiribati has committed itself to the development and implementation of ecologically sustainable development practices. Kiribati has also drafted a national environmental policy, which notes: The maintenance of Kiribati's unique environment through protection and judicious utilization of its scarce resources is extremely important for sustainable growth and development. It is necessary therefore, to¿. protect mangroves and stop soil erosion and pollution of sea. UNDP is presently assisting Kiribati to develop a National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan, which will focus mainly on building and strengthening a National Environment Management Strategy (NEMS), the National Development Plan and other sectoral plans will enable Kiribati to meet its obligations under the Convention on Biological Diversity.last updated: Tuesday, November 24, 2009
