Objectives
Practically all land on Tokelau is held by customary title and management objectives are largely specified by the taupulga on each island. Tokelau¿s principal land management objectives are specified in the National Environmental Management Strategy 2000, which articulates an action strategy for strengthening environmental management and sustainable development. This environmental strategy profiles 20 action plans in key environmental areas including:
- development of a national environmental management and planning policy;
- strengthening the Environment Unit of the Department of Natural Resources and Environment;
- development of Environmental Impact Assessment guidelines and procedures;
- review of village environmental laws and formulation of environmental regulations;
- initiation of programmes in biodiversity conservation, protected areas and ecotourism.
