FAO Forestry country profiles - forest management
Management plans
Natural forests in Fiji are under the control of customary owners. Management of large tracts of forests is generally passive, with little or no management input. All logging licenses issued must comply with the requirements of the Fiji National Code of Logging Practice, implemented in 1990. The Code of Logging Practice requires the preparation of detailed logging and management plans. It prescribes desirable practices aimed at protecting the forest environment, its assets and its users, while allowing the execution of economically viable harvesting within acceptable safety standards. The main elements of the code include requirements for planning, operational standards, environmental requirements, equipment and safety standards and requirements for training and supervision. It covers all commercial logging operations.
Planning infrastructure has been strengthened by the implementation of a Forest Resources Tactical Planning Project, which assists in the provision of mapping data and training to help establish a practical and effective process for the preparation of environmentally sound stand-level logging plans, hardwood plantation plans, and management plans. Management responsibility for Fiji¿s plantation resource is vested in the Fiji Hardwood Corporation and Fiji Pine Ltd. Both corporations have detailed management plans in place.
