Trends

Forest management in Kiribati is mainly limited to agroforestry endeavours and is likely to remain so in the foreseeable future. The primary limitations on any forest management or conservation efforts are a lack of public awareness of the need to protect and conserve resources, and a lack of resources to implement programmes - including education and awareness programmes.

Promotion of sustainable forest management

Kiribati has few special programmes designed to promote sustainable forest management. An annual 'plant a tree' day is run by the Ministry of Natural Resource Development. Priority programmes for implementation include a vegetation survey, public awareness campaigns, and establishment of a woodlot and multi-purpose tree planting programme. These are presently constrained by a lack of resources.
