Trends

Native vegetation is valued, and there is an increasing awareness of the need to preserve and protect endangered areas. The generally passive attitude of local people towards forest programmes is changing and councils in particular are showing signs of increased involvement.

Promotion of sustainable forest management

The Agriculture Division has implemented a Forest Resource Management (FRM) and Seedlings Nursery and Tree Improvement (SNI) programme. Around 2 500 ha are managed under the programme. Tree maintenance and nursery development expertise under the programme is extended to private landowners and benefits include salt spray protection, live fencing and windbreaks, and soil improvement. An Urban and Community Forestry programme has also been established to further encourage community care of trees. The programme is aimed at enhancing the environment through tree planting for wind and salt spray protection, as a source of supplementary food and to enhance urban areas.
