The future for New Caledonian forestry activities is promising. While it is unlikely to become self-sufficient for timber needs in the near future, it appears to have this capacity. Its natural forests have been comparatively well managed and should supply around 40 percent of New Caledonia's wood requirements as the plantation estate matures. Nonetheless, large areas of natural vegetation on Grande Terre Island have been destroyed by burning, cultivation, livestock raising and mining.
