The Niue Country Report to the Pacific Islands Heads of Forestry Meeting notes that the country's three priority national initiatives to be implemented are: development of a forest policy, indigenous forest management, and indigenous species research. The completion of the National Forest Policy will provide a useful step toward more active and improved management of the indigenous forests.

Promotion of sustainable forest management

The principal forestry programme on Niue is the plantation programme, which is eventually expected to provide for most of the country's timber needs. This has been supported by a handful of research projects examining issues such as tree nutrition, growth and yield monitoring, and nursery techniques. An updated land cover map for Niue has been largely finalized in 2001 as part of an NZODA forestry project. There are presently no specific incentives offered to promote sustainable forest management.
