Trends

There is no discernable trend that specifically relates to forest management on Nauru. Rather, the government takes a largely passive role in respect to forests and forestry per se. The key to initiating an active government lies in the rehabilitation of the degraded phosphate mining upland and the potential establishment of a Forestry Division within the Department of Agriculture.

Promotion of sustainable forest management

In 1999, the Nauru Rehabilitation Corporation commissioned a detailed geographic information system (GIS) for Nauru. This system offers detailed information for use in mining and rehabilitation, environmental management and landscape architecture. Nauru anticipates utilizing the GIS as a decision-making tool for issues relating to land tenure, land use and sustainable development affecting renewable and non-renewable resources (including forests) on Nauru.
